The Arts Council is reviving its Holiday Spectacular with many of the same faces that made it overwhelmingly popular with audiences last winter.
It will continue to have all the pomp and pizzazz of its Radio City model. Curfman Hall will be filled with singers, dancers, and soloists depicting traditional holiday scenes like the NUTCRACKER, a Winter Park scene, Santa’s Workshop, a country Christmas, The Nativity and more. The cast will be made up of many talented people from our community.
Shows are Sunday, December 4 at 3:00 pm and Monday, December 5 at 7:30 pm.

29th Army Nation Guard Band

The 29th Army National Guard Band, now based out of Clifton Forge, will present "Home For Christmas".
This holiday concert will recognize the contributions of local service men and women from here in the Alleghany Highlands. The group originated in Roanoke in 1922 and performs in concert, marching band, and small ensembles for military and civilian functions around the Commonwealth and abroad. The Band's most recent foreign assignments were in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2002, and Normandy, France in 2004.
Anyone wishing to submit photos of local citizens who are currently of have in the past done military service should contact the Arts Council. These photos will be used as part of a slide show presentation during the concert.
American Spiritual Ensemble

The American Spiritual Ensemble will give a choral concert as part of an area-wide celebration of Martin Luther King Day. A master class will be offered that afternoon as well. Featuring some of the finest classically trained voices in the United States, this ensemble performs around the world keep the negro spiritual alive as an art form. This 23 member group has thrilled audiences with their dynamic repertoire in theaters and opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera and abroad in Germany, Britain, Japan, Spain and Scotland.
Van Gogh: The Final Lesson

International actor, playwright, and painter Joseph Kaknes portrays the famed artist Vincent Van Gogh in a one-man tour de force.
This story finds Van Gogh in his studio on the day before his suicide talking to his audience as if they are his students. Armed with brushes and paints, he conducts his final, parting lesson and recounts his life. In this intimate setting the actor mixes autobiographical narrative with an artist’s insight, dropping hints about technique as he paints his sunflowers. The performance is a powerful lesson in history, psychology, art and theatre that will leave a lasting impression.
Brass Five

The season finale will feature the amazing Brass Five. The "5" offer a vast repertoire from Renaissance, Classical, Dixieland, Jazz, Rock to Country that easily pleases everyone, young and old alike. Noted for being “experts in the art of fun” this group will help the Arts Council and its audience celebrate 59 years of carrying out the mission of providing “Arts for All” of the Alleghany Highlands. Foreshadowing the following 60th Anniversary season, the event will come complete with birthday cake and a special rate for individuals 59 years of age.
